    Findings from the EMS Study Show that Electrical Myostimulation (EMS) Promotes Glucose Metabolism and Oxygen Uptake in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes

    Goal:

    Exercise program is advised for those with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) to enhance glycemic control. A recent technique called electrical myostimulation (EMS) of skeletal muscles may improve patients with chronic heart failure’s ability to exercise. This research used a newly created stimulation suit that targets the trunk, leg, and arm muscles to examine the benefits of EMS in T2DM on glucose metabolism, body composition, and physical performance.

    Subjects and methods:

    15 people (nine of them were men; age range, 61.7–14.8 years) attended EMS training twice a week for 10 weeks. The effects on blood sugar, HbA(1c), oxygen intake, and body composition were studied.

    Results:

    With a concurrent trend for enhanced maximal oxygen consumption (from 14.5 to 14.7 mL/kg/min [P=0.059]), there was a substantial growth in oxygen uptake at the aerobic threshold from 12.3 to 13.3 mL/kg/min (P=0.003) and a substantial increase in maximum functional capacity from 96.9 to 101.4 to 7.9 W (P=0.046). HbA(1c) level reduced from 7.7 to 7.2 percent, and fasting blood glucose level dropped from 164.0 to 133.4 mg/dL (P=0.001), although mean overall mass and the percentage of body fat remained relatively constant, decreasing from 101.5 to 103.1 kg and 38.8 to 40.3 percent, respectively.

    Conclusions:

    In T2DM patients, EMS may enhance glucose metabolism and functional capacity. These findings imply that EMS may become a revolutionary therapeutic supplementary method of exercise training and may support patients in overcoming a sedentary lifestyle.
